Uzbekistan Issues License for Nuclear Plant Unit
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Uzbekistan’s Committee for Industrial, Radiation and Nuclear Safety under the Cabinet of Ministers has issued a construction license for a nuclear power plant unit featuring an RITM-200N reactor, the agency’s press service said.
The decision was taken following the review of project documentation submitted by the State Institution “Directorate for the Construction of a Nuclear Power Plant.” The materials underwent a comprehensive expert assessment at the Scientific and Technical Center for Radiation and Nuclear Safety under the committee.
This step followed an earlier permit issued by the regulator on March 23 for the use of the construction site. After that, specialists began reviewing the design solutions and safety justification materials for the reactor units based on the RITM-200N configuration.
The assessment was carried out in accordance with national legislation, international practice, and recommendations of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Foreign experts and representatives of international organizations were involved in the review process, including specialists from Russia’s Scientific and Technical Center for Radiation and Nuclear Safety. Following the evaluation, the committee’s board decided to issue the license.
The agency stressed that state supervision will be maintained at all stages of project implementation to ensure compliance with licensing conditions, safety requirements, and the protection of the population and the environment.
The nuclear power plant is being built in the Jizzakh region. The RITM-200N reactor unit, with a capacity of 55 MW, is part of an integrated nuclear power complex that also includes two VVER-1000 Generation III+ reactor units.
The total capacity of the facility will exceed 2.1 GW. Excavation work for the reactor building pit began in October 2025, while initial concrete works for the foundation started in March 2026.
